Karolina Ekholm has done pioneering research on international trade and multinational firms, publishing articles in leading scholarly journals, like the Journal of International Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, European Economic Review and Economic Journal.

She was a member of the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council from its inception in August 2007 until 2009. Between March 2009 and October 2014, Karolina Ekholm was Deputy Governor of Sveriges Riksbank, and from October 2014 through January 2019 she served as State Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of Finance. During this time she was on leave from a position as Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Stockholm University.
