Driver shortage: causes, perspectives, recommendations for action

The aim of this study was to examine whether and to what extent the statements in the BAG report “Special report on the current driver situation in the German road haulage industry” from May 2007 also apply to Baden-Württemberg and the Stuttgart region. In addition, a 10-year forecast was to be drawn up for the further development of the problem in Baden-Württemberg. On this basis, recommendations for action were then derived for companies, politicians and administrators, with the focus on measures that can be implemented in the state and/or in the region itself.

The most important results:

  • Driver shortage is already a brake on growth.
  • The majority of companies are unable to fill vacancies.
  • Applicants have deficits in “soft skills”.
  • Driver shortage will increase massively.
  • Vocational training must be strengthened, image of the profession must be improved.
